Duddon Valley

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:14 am

The Duddon Valley is a valley in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. The River Duddon flows through the valley, rising in the mountains between Eskdale and Langdale, before flowing into the Irish Sea near Broughton in Furness. In its lower reaches it is bounded by the Furness Fells and Harter Fell.

The part of the valley near the village of Ulpha is marked as “Dunnerdale” on Ordnance Survey maps, and upstream towards the village of Seathwaite is Hall Dunnerdale. The name “Dunnerdale” is often used as a synonym for “Duddon Valley”, but many people, including Alfred Wainwright, prefer the name “Duddon Valley” and consider that Dunnerdale as a valley is properly the small valley above Broughton Mills that contains Dunnerdale Beck. It is this tributary valley that has given its name to the “Dunnerdale Fells”, which are between Broughton Mills and the main Duddon Valley, and to the parish “Dunnerdale with Seathwaite”, which includes the valley of Dunnerdale Beck as well as the main length of the River Duddon. Interestingly, advertisements for holiday cottages at Hall Dunnerdale describe the cottages as being “in the Duddon Valley”.

From the top of the valley, steep motor roads lead west over the Hardknott Pass to Eskdale and east over the Wrynose Pass to the Langdale valleys. A less steep pass to Eskdale over Birker Fell leaves the valley at Ulpha, with extensive views of the Scafell range.

Dracula (Dell Comics)

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:16 am

Dracula is a superhero comic book series published by Dell Comics, based on the three classic Universal Pictures monsters (The other two titles were Frankenstein and Werewolf).

Publication history

Dracula lasted 3 issues from 1966 through 1967, numbered 2 through 4. (#1, published in 1962, was an adaptation of the 1931 film). In 1972-73, Dell reprinted the series, numbering them #6-8 (the reason for skipping issue #5 is unknown).

Series background

The hero of the comic, Dracula, is a direct descendant of the original Count Dracula, now working as a medical researcher in the old Dracula castle. Due to his experiments, he gains certain bat-like powers (like being able to turn into a bat, etc.). He then embarks on a superhero career, making a costume and leaving for America (since the local peasants have burned down his castle). In America, he adopts the secret identity of “Al U. Card.” In issue #4, his lab assistant B.B. Beebe accidentally gains the same powers, and became his sidekick, Fleeta.

Right Thurr” is a 2003 hip hop single from Chingy. The song peaked at #2 on the U.S. Hot 100 and #17 on the United Kingdom pop charts.

The song is a good example of the fur-fair merger (merging “there” and “thurr”) that is becoming prevalent in African American Vernacular English. It is also an exaggeration of AAVE accents in St. Louis where Chingy is from.

English Canada

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:11 am

English Canada is a term used to describe one of the following:

  1. English Canadians, a term usually meaning English-speaking or anglophone Canadians, the official language majority in the country except New-Brunswick and Quebec as well. This usage is employed when comparing English- and French-language literature, media, or art.
  2. The Canadian provinces which are majority anglophone. Today, this includes all of them other than Quebec. This usage is usually employed in the context of geopolitical discussions involving Quebec. Among supporters of the two-nations theory, English-Canada is one of those two nations, the other being French Canada or Quebec. English-Canada in this sense is often referred to as the “ROC” (Rest of Canada).
  3. English Canadian, in some historical contexts, is used to designate English Canadians, Canadians who have origins in England (in contrast to Scottish-Canadians, Irish-Canadians etc.).

According to the 2001 Census of Canada, the population of English Canada is 25,246,220 using the first meaning, 22,513,455 using the second, and at least 5,978,875 using the third (the number of Canadians of English origin is likely much higher than the nearly 6 million who reported as much, 6.7 million people reported their sole ethnicity as “Canadian”, without further specification, though most likely English, French, Scottish, Irish, etc. or an admixture of multiple ethnicities which includes one or more of these).

Tobago House of Assembly

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:12 am

The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) is the local government body responsible for the island of Tobago within the twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The THA was established in 1980 to rectify some of the disparities in the relationship between the two islands. In addition to the normal local government functions the THA handles many of the responsibilities of the central government, but lacks the ability to collect taxes or impose local laws or zoning regulations. The THA consists of 12 elected assemblymen and four appointed councillors. Three councillors are appointed on the advice on the Chief Secretary and one on the advice of the Minority Leader. The Chief Secretary is the leader of the majority party in the assembly.

The first THA elections were held on November 24, 1980. The Democratic Action Congress led by A.N.R. Robinson won eight seats and the People’s National Movement won four seats (a reversal of the 1977 County Council elections in which the PNM won seven seats and the DAC 4). The DAC went on to win the 1984 elections by a margin of 11-1 over the PNM. The National Alliance for Reconstruction (into which the DAC merged in 1986) continued to dominate the THA winning the 1988 elections, and the 1992 elections elections by an 11-1 margin over the PNM. It won the 1996 elections by a margin of 10-2, with the PNM and an independent candidate winning one seat each.

In the 2004 elections the PNM gained control of the THA, winning eight seats to the NAR’s four. The PNM consolidated their hold on the THA in the January 2005 elections. The PNM currently holds 11 seats in the THA while the DAC (which reformed after splintering from the NAR in 2004) holds a single seat.

Dell Dimension

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:24 pm

Dell Dimension is a line of home desktop computers manufactured by Dell, Inc. As of June 2007, Dell no longer makes the Dimension line other than for business and in non American markets. The high-end Dimension 9200 (XPS 410 in the Amercian market) is still manufactured. The E520/1 and their “C” models no longer exist and are now part of the Inspiron line, previously only a laptop line, under the names Inspiron 530/1 (S) with a new case design.

Current Dell Dimension models

  • Dimension 9200 - Only in the Dell business sections, and the Canadian version of the XPS 410. The 9200, like the consumer-oriented XPS 410, has a taller case than the old E and C models. Like the majority of the company’s current models, the 9200 is offered with Intel CPUs, including the Pentium D, Core 2 Duo, and Core 2 Quad. Has a 375 watt power supply, like the XPS 410.
  • Dimension 9200C- Only in the Dell business sections, bearing a strong appearance to the consumer-driven XPS 210. Also offers Intel chipsets and CPUs, has a 275 watt power supply.

Linux reboot issue

Dell Dimension E520 cannot do a proper reboot with the normal Linux code and thus must rely on its BIOS for reboot. In order to deal with it, Linux uses a BIOS based method for reboot. Prior to reboot, Linux switches to real mode and writes to CMOS register 0×0f which is the BIOS reset entry point. The BIOS POST routine will then recognize that as telling it to do a proper reboot.

Del tha Funkee Homosapien

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:30 pm

Del tha Funkee Homosapien, also known as Del the Funky Homosapien and Deltron Zero is an alternative hip hop artist. Del was born Teren Delvon Jones on August 12, 1972 in Oakland, California . He currently lives in Richmond.

Biography

Cousin of renowned rapper Ice Cube, Del began his career writing lyrics for Cube’s backing band, Da Lench Mob . In 1991, with the help of cousin Ice Cube, Del released his first solo album, I Wish My Brother George Was Here . Although the album was a commercial success, it received mixed reviews from the hip-hop community. And ultimately Del, who was not pleased with the album himself, took matters into his own hands, and completely severed his relationship with cousin Ice Cube for his next album, No Need for Alarm. No Need for Alarm also saw the introduction of Del’s crew Hieroglyphics . No Need for Alarm was a bold move on Del’s part as it broke away from the model that had worked so successfully on his first album. Rather than the use of multiple P-Funk samples (like most hip-hop of the time), No Need for Alarm featured a more sophisticated, almost jazzy sound . No Need for Alarm was a commercial failure for Del, and it would be another five years before the release of his third album. About a month before the release of his third album Future Development Del received a letter from his label, Elektra, stating that his contract had been terminated .

1998 saw the release of Del’s third solo album Future Development, the album was only available on the Hieroglyphics website for download, and in tape form in Japan. Future Development was re-released in 2002 under the Heiroglyphics Imperium label. Del also released another collaborative work with the Hieroglyphics crew in 1998, 3rd Eye Vision, it was the Hieroglyphics crew’s first album. Two years later, Del released his fourth solo album, Both Sides of the Brain, as well as Deltron 3030 which was a collaborative work with artists Dan “the Automator” Nakamura and Kid Koala. Exposure from the 3030 project helped to expand Del’s fan base. The 3030 project was particularly interesting because the CD was a work of science fiction, telling stories about life and hip hop in the year 3030.

Del collaborated with Gorillaz for two songs on their debut album, both of which became singles: “Clint Eastwood” and “Rock the House”. In their videos he was portrayed as a ghost. Del later commented on the success of “Clint Eastwood” by saying that he actually wrote the song with the book “How to Write a Hit Song,” a book that he bought with a coupon his mother gave him. After the song went platinum he gave the plaque to his mother[1]. As part of Russel Hobbs’ backstory, the character of Del was one of Russel’s friends that was gunned down in a drive-by shooting, whose ghost possessed Russel. When Del was not invited to work on the Demon Days album, a story was written that Del and the other spirits that possessed Russel were exorcised in 2003.

2003 also saw the release of Full Circle, the second studio album from the Hieroglyphics crew.

In 2004 Elektra released The Best of Del The Funky Homosapien: The Elektra Years — without the approval of Del. The CD only includes songs from his first two albums, along with a handful of b-sides from that era. Del was not pleased and advised people to not buy the CD, saying it was just Elektra trying to make money off of him due to his newfound fame.

Together with his crew, Del has established his own independent record label, Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings, which primarily consists of Hieroglyphics and a few other artists with whom the group collaborates regularly.

Del’s lyrics often reflect his interests, offering humor and themes that differ from mainstream hip hop. His songs have discussed video games, bad hygiene, intergalactic rap battles, and more. In 2000, the song “Jaw Gymnastics”, featuring Casual, was featured in the game Knockout Kings. In 2000, the song “Positive Contact” from Deltron 3030 was featured in the game Mat Hoffman’s Pro BMX. In 2001, the song “If You Must” was featured in the game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3. In 2003, the song “Positive Contact” from Deltron 3030 was featured in the game Tony Hawk’s Underground. In 2005, the song “Burnt” featuring Hieroglyphics was featured in the game Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland. In 2006, the song “Catch A Bad One” was used in the game . Also in 2006 his song “Dr. Bombay” was used in the movie Beerfest and more recently a Hieroglyphics song “At the Helm” was featured in commercials for and is used in Tony Hawk’s Project 8. A Hieroglyphics song “Don’t Hate the Player” was also featured in NBA 2K7.

Del has also had many songs featured in snowboarding movies. ‘Press Rewind’ was the song for Eero Ettala’s Part in the film White Balance and ‘If You Must’ was in DC Mountain Lab.

Currently there is a DVD available called 11th Hour, which DVD contains some live footage, footage of him in the studio and around the house, as well as footage of him recording 11th Hour. The CD is scheduled to come out on October 2nd, 2007. It will be his first solo album in more than seven years.

According to an interview with Del on the latest edition of the Hierocast, Hiero’s official podcast, progress has been made on 11th Hour and the beats and the cuts for the sequel to Deltron 3030 are complete. He also did an Interview on The Breakdown a show on ItsHipHop.tv where he talked about his upcoming projects, his career, Ice Cube, and E40.

Current status on Del’s new albums is that 11th Hour will be released first, with the new Deltron album, Deltron Event II being released afterwards. Both albums are expected to be released in 2008.

As of summer 2007, rumors circulated around the internet that “11th Hour” will be released by underground hip hop label Def Jux as opposed to Hiero Imperium. CEO and MC El-P all but confirmed Del’s signing recently in a cryptic myspace blog post.

Dell Comics

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:34 pm

Dell Comics was the comic book publishing arm of Dell Publishing, which got its start in pulp magazines. It published comics from 1929 to 1973. At its peak, it was the most prominent and successful American company in the medium.

Its first title was The Funnies which was the first comic book to feature original material, but since it was published in the tabloid format as opposed to the standard one, it is normally not recognized as such.

The company formed a partnership in 1938 with Western Publishing, in which Dell would finance and distribute publications that Western would produce. While this diverged from the regular practice in the medium of one company handling finance and production and outsourcing distribution, it was a highly successful enterprise with titles selling in the millions.

Dell Comics was best known for its licensed material, most notably the animated characters from Walt Disney Productions, Warner Bros., Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Walter Lantz Studio along with many movie and television properties such as Tarzan and the Lone Ranger. Writer/artists Walt Kelly and Carl Barks are the most noted talents associated with the company. Other prolific scripters were Gaylord DuBois, Paul S. Newman, Don “Arr” Christensen, John Stanley, Bob Gregory, Robert Schaefer and Eric Freiwald, Lloyd Turner and Carl Fallberg. Artists who worked on comics published by Dell included Fred Harman, Alex Toth, Russ Manning, Jesse Marsh, Paul Murry, Tony Strobl, Harvey Eisenberg, Ken Hultgren, Dick Moores, Jack Bradbury, Roger Armstrong, Jack Manning, Bill Wright, Pete Alvarado, Dan Spiegle, Paul Norris, Frank Bolle, Artie Saaf, and John Buscema. Famed fantasy writer Charles Beaumont contributed a handful of stories for Dell’s funny animal comics early in his career, all done in collaboration with William F. Nolan.

From 1939 to 1962, Dell’s most notable and prolific title was the anthology Four Color. Published several times a month, the title (which primarily consisted of standalone issues featuring various licensed properties) saw more than 1,300 issues published in its 23-year history. It often served as a try-out title (much like DC’s Showcase) and thus the launching pad for many long-running series.

In 1948, Dell refused membership in the nascent Association of Comics Magazine Publishers. The association had been formed to pre-empt government intervention in the face of mounting public criticism of comic books. Dell vice-president Helen Meyer told congress that Dell had opted out of the association because they didn’t want their less controversial offerings to serve as “an umbrella for the crime comic publishers”. [1]

The end of Four Color in 1962 coincided with the end of the partnership with Western, which took most of its licensed properties and its original material and created its own imprint, Gold Key Comics.

Dell Comics continued for another 11 years with licensed television and motion picture adaptations (including Mission: Impossible, Ben Casey, Burke’s Law, Doctor Kildare, Beach Blanket Bingo) and a few generally poorly received original titles. Among the few long lasting series from this time include the teen-comic Thirteen Going on Eighteen (29 issues, written by John Stanley), Ghost Stories (37 issues, #1 only written by John Stanley), Combat (40 issues), Ponytail (20 issues), Kona Monarch of Monster Isle (20 issues), Toka the Jungle King (10 issues), and Naza Stone Age Warrior (9 issues). Dell additionally attempted to do superhero titles, including Nukla, Fab 4, Brain Boy, and a critically-ridiculed trio of titles based on the Universal Pictures monsters Frankenstein, Dracula and Werewolf that recast the characters as superheroes.

Dell Comics finally ceased publication in 1973, with a few of its former titles moving to Gold Key.

E-Services

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:50 am

e-Services or “eServices” is a highly general/generic term usually referring to the provision of services via the Internet (the prefix ‘e’ standing for “electronic”, as it does in many other uses). It is true Web jargon, meaning just about anything done online. This page, for example, is an e-Service.

It can cause confusion when used in conjunction with “Support,” as who knows the difference between “eServices” and online Support. It is often best to be avoided for this reason, especially in Website navigation.

e-Services include “e-commerce”, although they may also include non-commercial services.

Non-ecommerce e-services include (at least some) “eGovernment” services.

Sky Sword II

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:49 am

The TC-2 Sky Sword II (天劍二, Tien Chien II) is a radar guided air-to-air missile developed by the Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST) in Taiwan Republic of China (ROC) during the 1990s for the ROC Air Force. The TC-2 is intended as the mid-range supplement of the IR guided Sky Sword I (TC-1), and both are currently deployed on the ROCAF’s F-CK-1 fighters.

The TC-2’s seeker head is based on Motorola-Raytheon design, initially a competitor to the AIM-120 contract, which was later won by Hughes. CSIST is reported to have purchased 200 TC-2 seeker head “kits” from Raytheon. This led to speculation that the ROCAF would have no more than 200 TC-2’s in its inventory.

On March 17, 2004, Jane’s Defense Weekly reported that CSIST had produced an air-launched anti-radiation (ARM) missile, named Tien Chien IIA (TC-2A). The TC-2A is reported to have a new seeker head and guidance package, possibly with dual-mode passive RF and IR sensors, and an improved extended-range rocket motor. The updated missile, with its new seeker head, indicates that CSIST’s TC-2/TC-2A production is not limited to the original Raytheon order.

General characteristics (TC-2)

  • Primary Function: Air-to-air missile
  • Power Plant: Solid propellant
  • Length: 3.60 m
  • Weight: 190 kg
  • Diameter: 203 mm
  • Warhead: 30 kg Blast/fragmentation
  • Guidance: midrange inertial guidance, terminal radar guidance
  • Range: 60 km
  • Date Deployed: 1999

Rim of the Pit

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:27 pm

Rim of the Pit (1944) is a locked-room mystery novel written by Hake Talbot, a pen name of Henning Nelms.

It is one of two mystery novels written by Talbot featuring rugged adventurer Rogan Kincaid (the other being “The Hangman’s Handyman.”) Both were published in hardback as Inner Sanctum Mysteries. “Rim of the Pit” was published in the pulp magazine “Thrilling Mystery Novel”, then as a Dell mapback in the 1940s, a Bantam paperback in the 1960s (as part of “The World’s Great Novels of Detection” series chosen by Anthony Boucher), and reprinted in the 1980s in paperback by International Polygonics, Ltd. “The Hangman’s Handyman” appeared in a 1940s pulp magazine, but not in paperback form until 2005, when Ramble House produced one.

Plot

A group of people gather at a remote snowbound lodge in the wilds of northern New England. A seance is held in order to reach the dead husband of the medium. Remarried, the medium’s husband wants permission from the dead man to open a tract of land to logging. During the seance it appears that the spirit of the dead man returns to possess one of the group, using him as an instrument to murder another of the group. The hero, Rogan Kincaid, is an adventurer who takes it upon himself (with help from a Czech refugee, the daughter of the dead man, and others), to solve the mystery before the police are brought in. As impossibilities pile up (including a locked room murder, footprints that begin and end in the middle of an expanse of snow, and a murderer who seems to be able to fly after being taken over by a Windigo), it looks like the only explanation is a supernatural one.

In a poll of detective story writers this mystery was voted as second best of its type, behind John Dickson Carr’s The Hollow Man.

Hnat Khotkevych

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:19 pm

Hnat Martynovych Khotkevych (, born December 31, 1877- Kharkiv, died October 8, 1938 Kharkiv) was a Ukrainian writer, ethnographer, playwright, composer, musicologist, and bandurist.

His mother was a domestic worker. Little is known about his father, who left the family in the mid-1880s. As a youth he learned to play the piano and violin and later learned to play the bandura through observing the blind folk players of the region. He completed his tertiary studies in engineering.

Khotkevych was a renaissance man and was multi-talented. Although he was trained as a professional engineer, he is known more as a prolific Ukrainian literary figure, and also as a dramatist, composer and ethnographer, and founder of the modern bandura art.

Literature

Khotkevych initially began writing as a student having his first stories published in 1897 - “The Georgian lady”. Later appeared “The Prodical Son” (1898), “Analogies of life” (1901). “Mountain Aquarelles” (1914). His first major successful work was a novel about life in the Carpathian mountains - “The stone soul” which first appeared in 1911. Other novels followed. “Aviron” (1928), “Berestechko”, “Tarasyk”. An 8 volume collection of his writing were published in 1928.
Many of his unpublished works however have been lost.

Khotkevych’s winning formula for writing was to incorporate original folkloric and ethnographic material, in particular folks songs, tales, customs and even dialectical and lingual differences of the region or time which he as writing about. He included many aspects of the modernist style popular in Ukraine at the time.

Theatre

As a youth he had the chance of seeing a number of theatrical performances in Kharkiv. He was so taken by these performances that in the summers he organized a theatre in the village of Derkachi for all the peasants.

In 1903 he organized a Ukrainian workers theatre in Kharkiv which was also hugely successful. He produced and wrote over 50 plays. Because his activities addresses social and national issues he was forced to emigrate in 1905 to Halychyna which at that time, was under Austro-Hungarian rule.

In 1910 whilst in Halychyna he once again organized a theatrical troupe made up of illiterate Hutsuls who had great success touring Western Ukraine with ethnographic plays he had created.

In 1912 he returned to Kharkiv and renewed the activities of the Kharkiv Ukrainian Theatre until his exile.

He continued writing plays, the most interesting was the work Bohdan Khmelnytsky which chronicle the life and times of the renown kozak leader in the mid 16oo’s.

In 1936 he played the role in the film “Nazar Stodolya”, which appeared in 1937, but was however removed from showings.

Khotkevych wrote a number of studies on the history of “the Folk theatre in Galicia”, and “the Theatre in 1848″.

Music

As a student Khotkevych became well known for his bandura playing. He first purchased an instrument in 1894, and first performed on stage as a soloist in 1896. When he was expelled from the Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute he joined Mykola Lysenko’s touring choir as a bandura soloist. At a young age he was a renown virtuoso of the bandura.

In 1902, he was asked to read a paper on the music and traditions of the folk bandurists known as kobzars at the XIIth Archeological Conference held in Kharkiv in 1902. He prepared a paper and organized a concert which became the first performance of a bandura ensemble in history.

Since that time this artform became hugely popular throughout Ukraine.

After emigrating to Austria-Hungary in 1906 he traversed Halychyna with concerts of bandura music. In 1907, he wrote the first bandura handbook which was published in 1909 in Lviv.

In 1910, he had one of his bandura compositions - Odarochka - published in Kyiv. He returned to Central Ukraine in 1912 and was soon arrested, jailed and later exiled to Russia. He returned to Kharkiv only in 1917 where he taught Ukrainian Literature and Language at the Kharkiv Zoological College.

In 1920 he organised a Ukrainian choir that performed ethnographic choral works and in he 20’s had numerous compositions published.

From 1926 on, he taught the first conservatory level courses in bandura at the Kharkiv Muz Dram Institute. A new textbook for the bandura was partially published (the 3 final books were lost at the publishing house). A collection of his compositions for the bandura was prepared but was also lost by the publishing house. Only a handful of students completed these courses such as Leonid Haydamaka, O. Herashchenko, O. Hayevsky, I. Oleshko, and Hryhory Bazhul. Some were arrested in the early 30’s, others found their way out to the West during WWII.

In 1928, Khotkevych became the director of a special Bandura Studio, organized to retrain and convert the Poltava Bandurist Capella to play in the Kharkiv style. He composed and arranged numerous works for this ensemble. In 1931 the ensemble received the privilege of being the first Soviet ensemble to be invited to tour North America. Unfortunately the tour did not take place and Khotkevych was removed from the directorship of the ensemble in 1932. All of his pieces and arrangements being subsequently banned.

Apart from his musical performance and compositions, Khotkevych also produced a number of books on Ukrainian folk instruments, and the bandura specifically. These books were also banned from 1932.

Persecution

From 1928 Khotkevych began to have difficulties in all his publishing endeavours. Initially manuscripts began to disappear at publishing houses and in the mail. Works had to be submitted 3 or 4 times and then they were often sabotaged in the publishing houses. Khotkevych wrote numerous letters to complain, but little was done.

From 1931, he underwent numerous personal attacks in the Soviet press, which ultimately resulted in all his music and writing being banned in 1932 and his losing all employment.

In 1933 his family starved during the Great Famine as he was not given ration cards because he was unemployed. In 1934 in an attempt to kill him the was pushed under a train and was hospitalised for a period.

In 1938 during the Stalinist purges, he was arrested, tortured and secretly sentenced to death in 1938.

Soviet sources initially falsely stated that he was sent to Siberia for 10 years without the right to correspond. False death certificates were issued to state that he died in 1943.

He died on October 8, 1938.

Postmortem

Khotkevych was rehabilitated by the state in 1956; however, only a small part of his literary output was republished. In 1977, despite being on a UNESCO list of noted cultural figures to be commemorated, nothing was published.
In post 1991 Ukraine numerous works by this author have been republished and many manuscripts have found their way from the archives into publications due mainly to the efforts of the Khotkevych foundation in Kharkiv.

In 1989 a film was made after the Khotkevytch book “Kaminna dusha”.IMDB Database

Soup (novel)

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:52 pm

Soup is a 1974 children’s novel by Robert Newton Peck.

Its main characters are two boys, Robert (the narrator) and his close friend Luther, better known as “Soup”. It takes place during the 1930s in a small town in Vermont where the author also grew up, and deals with the daily lives of these two boys. Soup is a well-meaning but mischievous schemer, constantly coming up with elaborate plans that invariably land him and his pal Rob in trouble. Rob is more sensible but less wily and frequently finds himself conned into doing Soup’s dirty work. The two are best pals, however, and watch out for one another. Their frequent antagonist is school bully Janice Ryker, and Rob has a mad crush on the lovely Norma Jean Bissel.

Typical moments include the boys losing their clothes and stealing more from a rummage sale that has only women’s clothes, or Soup painting his name on a barn without permission and running the P over onto the corner, causing the farmer to yell “‘Souf’! I’ll get you ‘Souf’!”

There are several sequels to this book, including Soup and Me, Soup for President, Soup On Fire, Soup’s Hoop, and Soup 1776. Soup and Me and Soup For President were adapted into half-hour television episodes starring Christian Berrigan and Shane Sinutko for the TV series The ABC Weekend Special. The author, Robert Newton Peck, also wrote the popular book A Day No Pigs Would Die.
